Going for Gold!
Automated Space Specify the NP-3411 from DED for Receipt Printing for the New boutique.Goldsmiths Vending Machine at Westfield, Stratford City
With the ever increasing popularity of self service kiosks in so many consumer areas today, it’s not surprising that it has begun to branch out to higher value and luxury goods. The jewellery specialist chain boutique.Goldsmiths is now offering a unique and exciting way of purchasing goods and encouraging interest in window displays at their flagship store in Westfield, Stratford City.
The new self service kiosk at boutique.Goldsmiths uses a rotating carousel system to attract customers and attention to the store. Products are presented in windows on either side of the kiosk. Each product is held in an individual pod on the carousel which can be customised to optimise it’s appeal. The carousel can also be used to add impact to special promotions or highlight product ranges.
Designed and built by Rugby based Automated Space Ltd to be an integral part of the store frontage, the new kiosk at boutique.Goldsmiths offers many features in terms of aesthetics, functionality and security that make it pleasing to the eye whilst supporting the quality image that is expected from the Goldsmiths brand. Creating a convenient and hassle free shopping experience, the kiosk enables customers to purchase their goods immediately without queuing, at a convenient time, even when the store is closed.
Automated space worked with boutique.Goldsmiths on a bespoke design basis to ensure complete satisfaction with the finished product. The self service kiosk has several integrated parts, including a touch screen which allows products to be browsed and selected, a chip and pin machine for secure payments and of course a receipt printer to supply proof of purchase.
Working closely with DED to ensure that the receipt printer integration went smoothly, Automated Space specified size constraint issues for the printer immediately. The kiosk had been designed with a small footprint to facilitate ease of integration into the store front, space limitation inside the kiosk meant that the receipt printer would need to be small without compromising on performance. As the leading UK distributor for kiosk printers, DED suggested the NP-3411 printer from Nippon Primex.
Commenting on the selection of the NP-3411 from DED, Rod Mitchell from Automated Space said “we chose the NP-3411 due to the compact size of the unit; a 76mm wide receipt was needed to accommodate the company logo and this was the smallest width printer for this size of paper.”
Feedback on this innovative and exciting kiosk has been very positive thus far; lots of people are talking about the machine as well as looking at it in the shop window as they walk by.
The kiosk not only offers a new and unique way to purchase goods, it also logs all activity in terms of browsing and transactions to provide instant data, statistics and stock levels. It has a high security locking system, the window is made from security glass and there is a built-in security door protecting the products at the customer access point. This door only opens once the transaction is complete. The machine is robustly designed with high quality components to ensure reliability with minimal operator intervention.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the NP-3411 features a small footprint which is perfect for the kiosk environment. Ideal for printing in applications such as information kiosks and ticket issue, the NP-2311 features an auto paper loading mechanism, jam free cutter, fully opening print head and a paper low/out indicator. With dimensions of just 124.6mm wide x 123.5mm deep x 77.3mm high, the printer features a 24VDC supply, drivers for Windows 7/XP/2000/Vista/CE and Linux CUPS and interfaces for USB and RS232C Serial. Options include a paper bezel and a multi-position large capacity paper roll holder (increases paper capacity from 80mm diameter to 200mm diameter).

Just What the Doctor Ordered
Mediterranean Computer Services Specify the Star Micronics TSP800 from DED Limited for the Gibraltar Health Authority
Mediterranean Computer services have selected the Star Micronics TSP800 from DED Limited for the Gibraltar Health Authority to ensure quick and straightforward printing of prescriptions and other PDF files for Doctors surgeries throughout Gibraltar.
Founded in 1991, Mediterranean Computer Services is a well established IT services provider offering PC repairs, support contracts, structured installations and configuration as well as consultancy and printer repairs in Gibraltar. Working with the Gibraltar Health Authority, a need for new printers to print prescriptions within Doctors surgeries was identified. These printers also needed to offer the capability to print A4 sized PDF files generated from a web based application on a PC. These files needed to be smaller than A4 when printed, but of course still legible. Print speed was also an issue as no one was prepared to compromise on this.
When Mediterranean Computer Services contacted DED Limited, it soon became apparent that the TSP800 from Star Micronics was the ideal printer for the job. Not only does it offer an impressive print speed of 150mm per second, but it also accept paper rolls of various widths up to a maximum of 112mm wide. Without any software changes, the unique scalable Raster driver on the TSP800 allows the printer scale pages down for A4 to A6 and then print them in a format which is still legible. All of these features made the TSP800 ideal for use as a prescription printer, a compact internet printer and for Doctors surgeries throughout Gibraltar.
On selecting the TSP800, Joseph Cortes, Senior EHT Officer at the Gibraltar Health Authority commented “we are happy with the speed and convenience that the TSP800 has provided us”.
The Star Micronics TSP800 is a very fast thermal barcode, label, receipt and ticket printer which prints on papers of up to 150gsm in weight. The TSP800 uses Star’s simple “Drop-In & Print” paper loading feature and has an external paper feed path for large diameter and fanfold tickets as standard. Interfacing is no problem thanks to both ESC/POS. The TSP800 has a host of extra features including two colour printing, wall and desk mount brackets, interchangeable interfaces and drivers for most operating systems.

A Perfect Score!
British Gymnastics select the Posiflex DT-308 Terminal from 4Court Solutions & DED for use with their BG Score Software
The Posiflex DT-308 is being used by British Gymnastics as an integral part of their unique scoring system BG Score. The official scoring system of British Gymnastics, BG Score is used at all major gymnastics events across the UK and at all British championships.
BG Score is an advanced electronic scoring and results service, available for use at any gymnastics event. The most important part of the system alongside the BG Score software is the touchscreen terminal which enables the quick and accurate calculation of each individual gymnasts score. Judges input their score using a “Power over Ethernet” (PoE) networked keypad linked to the touchscreen terminal and once all the scores have been entered, the final score is displayed via 42” three-sided scoreboard displays ensuring that the audience, athletes and officials all see the final score for each gymnast immediately.
Once the scores have been displayed, the BG Score software generates a printed score slip automatically so that judges can review the score breakdown. IP telephones also facilitate the communication process and there are video cameras linked to the system so that each routine can be played back via the touchscreen terminal if necessary. All of the results for each event are instantly displayed on the British Gymnastics website and also sent to the ‘BG Mobile’ smartphone App.
Having spent 10 years developing the BG Score software in house, British Gymnastics decided it was time to introduce a new element into the system to make sure they continued to get the most from it – a new and more flexible touchscreen terminal was required. British Gymnastics contacted 4Court Solutions for advice on the most suitable terminal for the job. Having worked together on previous projects successfully, both parties were keen to continue the relationship.
The footprint and weight of any terminal being introduced into the system was the real issue on this project. With events all over the UK, any new items needed to be easily transportable. The Posiflex DT-308 was quickly identified as the perfect terminal for the job; light, compact and with a built in keyboard, it got a perfect score from all the judges on the panel.
On selecting the Posiflex DT-308, Ben Willcox, Event Technology Manager at British Gymnastics commented “We chose this terminal primarily because of its size and specification. As we travel around the UK a great deal, we are subject to many size and weight restrictions. The DT-308 is perfect for us and the heavy duty carry cases DED supplied alongside them have made transportation so much easier”.
Ben goes on to say “We may also need to stream HD video via the screen at some point in the future, so we opted for the dual core processor on the DT-308 to ensure we had the extra power to facilitate this. The UPS was also a really important feature for us. There are so many cables under the judge’s tables that we needed to be sure we had a back up power source in case one of the power cables to a terminal gets kicked out by mistake!”
The Posiflex DT-308 was recently used at the 2012 Gymnastics World Cup in Glasgow. The event took place in front of a capacity crowd at the brand new Emirates Arena, which saw 16 of the world’s top male and female gymnasts battling it out to be crowned number one. With just eight competitors in each category, tension was high as every individual score could have a substantial impact on the final standings. The successful event was topped off by a bronze medal for Britain’s Daniel Purvis.
British Gymnastics provides a national directive and structure for the sport; delivering a range of opportunities across the age spectrum to take part and stay in gymnastics, as well as developing talent and delivering top-level success. British Gymnastics is proud to be the UK Governing Body for the sport of Gymnastics. They exist to support, lead and inspire all those involved or interested in Gymnastics.

Now available from DED, the SM-S220i from Star Micronics has been developed as a response to the rapidly, growing demand for a mobile Bluetooth printer that is compatible with multiple operating systems (Windows, Android, Linux, iOS). The SM-S220i is Star’s first printer to be approved by Apple Inc and, unlike most printers available today, can pair directly with the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
Compatibility with iOS is a result of Star’s investment in Apple’s MFI (Made For iPhone, iPad, iPod) certification which is essential in the mobile printer market today with Apple products being a key part of the mobile industry. The SM-S220i also supports the Bluetooth SPP protocol which allows compatibility with other common operating systems.
As one of the first printers on the market with both iOS as well as Bluetooth SPP protocol, the SM-S220i gives a fantastic opportunity to offer a high quality, lightweight 2” mobile printer which is compatible with all major mobile platforms.
This type of printer is in demand in many markets from queue busting in retail and hospitality environments to home delivery and warehousing applications.
Payment processing devices can easily be attached to the SM-S220i through its accessory serial ports making the printer very adaptable for any payment application.
